HDP Declaration – Call for International observers

April 2nd, 2015

Dear Friends,

Legislative elections in Turkey on June 7th, 2015 are of crucial importance in terms of democratization of the state. As the HDP’s  (Peoples’ Democratic Party) representation in Europe, we would like to invite you as an international observer in order to enable total transparency and thus give indisputable results.

HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) decided to run as a party instead of independent candidates which was the case for the legislative elections in 2007 and 2011. The anti-democratic 10% electoral threshold prevented the Kurds as well as democratic forces in Turkey to be properly represented in the parliament. Pro-Kurdish political parties have therefore run for the elections with independent candidates to circumvent this threshold. Yet now, particularly after the electoral success (9.8%) of the HDP during the last presidential elections with the co-Chair Mr. Selahattin Demirtaş as candidate, the HDP together with its constituents decided to join elections as a party and to challenge the current electoral threshold.

An electoral success of the HDP will mean a lot in downgrading the authoritarian rule of President Erdoğan who wants to re-write the constitution and drive the country towards a reinforced presidential system free from check & balance mechanisms. As many opinion polls show, the only apparent way to prevent such an outcome is the HDP’s overcoming of the electoral threshold. The AKP government might therefore resort to electoral frauds, as it has been the case during previous elections. The upcoming elections are equally important for the sake of the ongoing peace process as well as many other issues related to democratization and transparency.

That is why the presence of international observers is of upmost importance for us; it can enable these elections to genuinely improve the democratic process in Turkey and thus prevent fraud. We invite you and your fellow colleagues to monitor the legislative elections of June 7th in Turkey in order to enable total transparency and thus give indisputable results.

For further information and registration, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our representation.

Sincerely yours,

Eyyup Doru
