Presidents from four groups at the EP addressed a letter to Mogherini concerning the situation in Kurdish region

March 03, 2016

Dear HR/VP Mogherini,
We write to you regarding the escalation of violence in the context of the conflict between the Turkish security forces and the PKK in the south-east of Turkey, which has already caused more than a hundred civilian deaths.
We are deeply concerned that the current climate of violence will continue to worsen, endangering the lives of innocent civilians and the stability of the country as a whole.
Therefore, the EU must act quickly in order to facilitate an immediate ceasefire of all parties involved in the conflict and a return to the negotiation table in order to find a political solution to a conflict that has lasted for over 40 years.
HR/VP Mogherini we urgently request you to pay the visit to the south-east region that was recently postponed. We also encourage you to pressure all parties to revert to the Kurdish Peace Process pushing for an open and inclusive dialogue between the different actors involved that might lead to the process of consolidating peace, stability and the rule of law in the region.
We strongly urge you, as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to seize this moment by actively working to secure a strong and unified EU response to the current conflict and urge the return to peaceful talks.
Yours faithfully,
Rebecca Harms, Co-President of the Greens/EFA Group
Gianni Pittella, President of the S&D Group
Guy Verhofstadt, President of the ALDE Group
Gabriele Zimmer, President of the GUE/NGL Group
