Selahattin Demirtas met Sinn Fein National Chairperson Declan Kearney at the EP
HDP’s co-chairman Selahattin Demirtas met Sinn Fein National Chairman Declan Kearney today at the European parliament in Brussels.
Recent political developments in Turkey, negotation tables and the peace process, and Sinn Fein’s experiences were discussed.
Demirtas introduced the meeting saying that Sinn Fein’s experience was very much discussed in the frame of the the kurdish conflict resolution and underlined the fact that Jerry Adams had visited several times the kurdish regions and also underlined the fact that kurds were benefiting from the experience. Kearney said his party was closely following the kurdish struggle and that his support to the kurdish people will continue and that they were ready to contribute to the peace, giving the message that they were in solidarity with the people of Kurdistan. He also said that he fully understood the situation as themselve experienced similar processes, adding that what was needed was a lasting peace and for that underlined the necessity of international solidarity. He said their peace process was also very volatile and things suddenly went backwards at a time when there were real progress. He concluded by saying that as a party, they were ready to offer help and contribution and do their best for the resolution process. He also said he assessed a sustainable peace process by an inconditionnal cease fire and urgent demilitarisation.
Selahattin Demirtas said his party would be pleased to welcome Sinn Fein together with their representatives, and underlined in his speech:
“Our struggle are very similar and our movement has been attaching importance to the relationship we have with your party for a long time as you have carried out your struggle for many years and ensured peace between people. We would like to benefit from your experience in the context of our negotiation process because the process you took part in has experienced similar conditions which began with conflicted negociations overturned itself again after long period of negotiations. The fighting has killed a large number civilians of which heavy human rights violations took place. Our party would like to invite you to witness events on the field” he said.
