April 30 – Hearing of legal case against HDP’s former co-chair Mr. Selahattin Demirtaş in Istanbul
The third hearing of legal case against HDP’s former co-chair Mr. Selahattin Demirtaş (April 11, 2018)
HDP’s former co-chair Mr. Selahattin Demirtaş was arrested on 4 November 2016 together with Ms. Figen Yüksekdağ and seven other MPs.
Mr. Demirtaş has been in Edirne F Type Prison since his arrest. He will stand trial at the Istanbul 26th Assize Court and with the charge of “terrorist propaganda” in a speech he delivered at Newroz celebrations in Istanbul on 17 March 2013. Mr. Demirtaş faces up to five years in prison for this speech.
The final hearing of this case, at which both Mr Demirtaş and MP for Ankara Mr Sırrı Süreyya Önder stand trial, will be held on 30 April 2018 (10:30 am) in İstanbul at the Silivri, Courtroom No 2. Mr. Demirtaş will attend the hearing in person.
The trial of Mr Selahattin Demirtaş is of utmost importance for Turkey’s political future and will be even more important given the recent decision of the ruling power to anticipate the general elections that should have taken place in November 2018, to June 24, with the aim of further destabilizing the opposition which will have to organize itself in a very short time and with very limited means.
We would like to invite you to observe the hearing and bear witness to the political use of the law to silence democratic opposition, suspension of the rule of law and destruction of separation of powers in Turkey.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or need assistance for the necessary arrangements to observe the hearing.
Eyyup Doru, European representative of the HDP in Europe.
