Press conference on post-election situation in Turkey and hunger strikes

A press conference organized by Marie-Christine Vergiat ( Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left  in the European Parliament) and attended by 6 MEPs from three different political groups was held on Wednesday 18 April in Strasbourg.

Gathered around the theme of the results of the elections in Turkey and the situation of Kurdish hunger strikers in Turkey and Europe, the various parliamentarians expressed their deep concern about the degrading state of health of the strikers and called on Europe to make a more effective decision on these issues. Bodil Valero ( Vice-Chair of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance), Malin Björk and Miguel Urban Crespo from the Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left, Ana Miranda from the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance and MEP Julie Ward from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Group took the floor to denounce the seriousness of the situation regarding the hunger strikers in Turkey and Europe and the silence of the European institutions in the face of such a dramatic situation.

Eyyup Doru, representative of the HDP, thanked the mobilization of the various MEPs and the many participants to the press conference for their support and mobilization throughout the elections and the Kurdish politicians hunger strikes movement.

Mr. Doru said that the two objectives of the local elections had been fully met despite the limitless repression against his party’s members, ousting the AKP in the big Turkish cities and recovering the Kurdish cities whose mayors democratically elected officials had been illegally removed from office to be arbitrarily replaced by central government trustees.

Regarding the demands of the strikers he personally visited the same morning accompanied by three MEPs, he reported the spokesmen of the strikers made the request that the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe of 24 January 2019 calling to the respect of the fundamental rights of members of the opposition and the end of the isolation of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan be enforced by Turkey.
